Why is proper implant care so important?
A dental implant functions as an artificial tooth root and enables fixed, permanent tooth replacement. Natural tooth roots sit well protected and securely anchored in the periodontium — the supporting structures of the teeth. Natural teeth are firmly held in the jawbone by tight connective tissue fibres, while immune cells in the periodontium provide protection and stability.
With an implant, this protective periodontium is missing. If the gum around an implant becomes loose, bacteria can reach the bone and trigger inflammation. The gum forms small gaps and no longer seals tightly around the implant. There are also fewer immune cells available to fight bacteria, which is why correct implant care is just as important — if not more important — than with natural teeth.
Poor oral hygiene leads to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and can cause infections such as mucositis, periodontitis, gingivitis, or — in the worst case — peri-implantitis.
- Mucositis: Inflammation of the soft tissue around an implant
- Periodontitis: Inflammation of the tooth-supporting structures
- Gingivitis: Initial loosening and inflammation of the gum tissue
Neglecting implant cleaning can also lead to the formation of gum pockets. If inflammation progresses into the bone, it is known as peri-implantitis. These bacterial infections put the implant at serious risk — it may loosen and, in the worst case, fall out.
Cleaning Dental Implants at Home – What You Should Pay Attention To
Dental implants can be cleaned using either a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush. Special single-tuft brushes are also suitable for implants, bar constructions or removable dentures.
Electric toothbrush
Regardless of whether you use an electric or manual toothbrush, you should brush your teeth at least twice daily. To protect the gums, choose a soft toothbrush. Move the electric toothbrush gently from the upper outer surfaces to the lower inner surfaces.
Modern electric toothbrushes help maintain the optimal brushing time. Speak with your dentist about when it is safe to start using an electric toothbrush after implant placement, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Cleaning implants with a manual toothbrush
Place the manual toothbrush at a 45° angle. Remove plaque using gentle, vibrating movements and sweep upwards or downwards — from the gum towards the crown. Start with the outer surfaces, then the inner surfaces — first the upper jaw, then the lower jaw. Only the chewing surfaces of the molars may be brushed more vigorously. Make sure to brush your teeth twice daily for at least three minutes.
Dental Floss and Interdental Brushes for Cleaning Between Teeth
Using dental floss or interdental brushes is essential for the health of your implants, as bacterial infections often occur in these areas.
- Dental floss is ideal for tight spaces and cleans areas your toothbrush cannot reach.
- Interdental brushes are perfect for larger gaps. They provide thorough cleaning around implants and help prevent bacterial inflammation.
Choose the correct brush size to avoid injuring the gums — your dentist or dental hygienist will help you select the right one.
Implant Care After Brushing
Professional Teeth Cleaning (Prophylaxis) Twice a Year
In addition to thorough home care, you should visit your dentist at least twice a year for a check-up and professional prophylaxis.
Your dentist will check whether your implant is still firmly anchored in the jawbone and can detect early signs of bacterial inflammation.
A professional dental cleaning once or twice a year removes soft and hard deposits — even in hard-to-reach areas — and significantly reduces the risk of inflammation.
